Jacques Cartier is rightfully considered the first European to step on the Canadian land, though even before him European fishermen crossed Atlantics in search of codfish, landed on the Canadian coast and came in contact with local population. In his journal Cartier writes that when they landed, the Indians came to them offering fur. Along with other events this fact shows that it was not the first meeting of the Indians with Europeans. On the 24th of June, 1534, French sailor Jacques Cartier landed in Newfound Land at the Gaspe Peninsula and declared these lands the property of the King of France. He considered the Saint-Laurent River to be the way to Asia.

During his second (1535-1536) and third (1541-1542) trip he went up the Saint-Laurent River to the settlements of Hurons and Iroquois (close to the present-day Montreal) and builds the first settlements of French people on the newfound land. After the three trips of Cartier France for some time lost interest to vast open northern areas; this interest was brought back only at the end of 16th the beginning of 17th century as development of fur trade increased.
